Do I dare say it out loud? I'm almost afraid to but I'm going to anyway! IT'S SPRING!
After 7 months of winter we tend to get a little bit excited here in Central Alberta when the first signs of spring appear. Canadian Geese have returned, we've had some double digit temperatures and most of the snow is gone! My robin friend is back singing to me from the same spruce tree that she claims as hers each year. And last night I heard the frogs chirping in the slough. That officially declares to me that winter is over! With promises of temperatures over 20 degrees celsius, this weekend will be perfect to get out, get some fresh air, and do a little exploring. On that note, for my first weekly edition of "Friday's Five" here are five fun ways that I like to celebrate spring: 1. Visit your local greenhouse There is nothing better than the fresh smell of young plants and warm dirt! New life bursting from little pots is so inspiring after a long winter of bare trees and gardens buried deep under snow. The almost tropical warmth and humidity are certainly welcoming too! It's a great time to check out new varieties of your favourite flowers, vegetables and shrubs and plan for the upcoming growing season. And to inevitably take home a few hardy specimens that can handle the still chilly nights! 2. Go antiquing I love treasure hunting! The thrill of a great find. I can literally lose myself for hours! I've discovered that the best antique and gift stores seem to be in small towns. Even if antiques aren't your thing, the people that run these quaint little shops are equally as interesting as the vintage goodies that fill their shelves. They are always friendly and love to share the many stories behind their collections. That alone is worth the trip! 3. Pack a picnic lunch Nothing fancy required. A few sandwiches, raw veggies, juicy watermelon and freshly squeezed lemonade make a great lunch. Find the perfect sunny spot at a local park or even in your own backyard to spread out a big blanket and set up an informal and relaxing dining experience. It's a fantastic way to unwind and get in some quality time with family and friends. Leave the cellphones and the distractions of a busy life behind and enjoy the fresh air, good food and the company! 4. Take a hike There are wonderful nature trails to hike, walk or bike in or near most towns. The sights, sounds and smells of nature waking up to greet spring are a great way to liven up the senses after a long, cold, dark winter. Plus a little exercise sure won't hurt after undoubtedly too many hours spent sitting inside in front of the TV or on our devices. Be sure to bring your rubber boots along... who doesn't love to find a puddle to splash in? There are no age limits on that! 5. Step back in time Old stuff is cool. And history is fascinating. Touring a museum or historic sight is a great way to get out and explore. I love taking a nostalgic look at the way things used to be. An era where times were simpler and the world wasn't in such a hurry. I like to imagine the stories that the old buildings could tell of the individuals who walked through their doors and did business, celebrated holidays, gathered with family and friends, prayed or went to school. A glimpse back is a great reminder to slow down, be present in each moment and cherish the people in our lives. I hope that this week's "Friday's Five" post will motivate and inspire you to enjoy this fresh season of new. Feel the gentle spring breeze and warmth of the sun. Get out and about. Do some exploring. Do something you've been waiting all winter to do! Whatever it is that you decide to do this weekend, be sure to comment below and let me know what you get up to!
