Feeling overwhelmed? Dealing with tight deadlines? Too many commitments?
I've been there. Many times. And occasionally that feeling still gets a hold of me, settles deep in my chest and results in anxiety and sleepless nights.
When it does, here are five simple ways that I use to manage stress:
1. Prayer and praise
Let go and let God. Tell Him your worries and let Him handle things. Then praise Him and thank Him for the many blessings and gifts in your life. Read the bible and find a scripture passage that speaks to what you are experiencing. One of my favourite verses is Matthew 11:28 "Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
2. Get some fresh air
Go outside and breathe in some fresh air and feel the warmth of the sun. Go for a walk, wander in the garden or just sit and enjoy the surroundings. The sights, sounds and smells of nature have a calming effect on your mind.
3. Enjoy a cup of hot tea or coffee
Whether you prefer green tea, chai tea or a double shot of espresso, sitting down with a warm cup of steaming tea or coffee will relax and soothe an anxious mind. Find a quiet spot, cuddle under a soft blanket and enjoy the simple act of holding a warm mug.
4. Get moving
It's been proven over and over again that exercise is a great way to combat stress and give a good dose of feel-good endorphins. Go for a run, even if you aren't a runner. It's called runner's high for a reason. Or if you prefer to slow down, stretch and connect, practice yoga. Yoga is great for releasing tension and clearing a troubled mind.
5. Soak it up
A bathtub full of warm water, bubbles or bath salts infused with essential oils are guaranteed to help you unwind. Turn on some soothing music, dim the lights and burn some natural beeswax or soy candles to create a relaxing and calming atmosphere.
Stress has so many negative effects on your health and well-being. Frequent headaches, fatigue, irritability and lack of motivation are just a few of the common symptoms of stress. Practicing these stress-beaters regularly, even when you aren't feeling anxious, will help keep you calm and in control and stop overwhelm and it's negative outcomes from taking over.
